Fifty and out
Tuesday 29th September 2009, 2:30PM BST.
ANDY WALKER completed his 50th marathon – and promptly called it a day.
Walker, 52, who is a fitness instructor at Beau Sejour, ran in Sunday’s Jersey marathon.
But he said yesterday that it was his last one because his hobby was getting too expensive. Worse still, he did not end on a high note as he struggled to a time of 4hr 15min.
‘I walked some of it,’ he said. ‘That was my second worst one ever. I’ve only done one slower than that.’
Walker (pictured) started marathon running in 2001 when he competed in the New York event.
‘That was pretty cool,’ he said. Since then he has competed all over the world.
He has run in Sydney, Marrakech and a number times in the USA, at Dallas, Memphis and Miami.
He has run all over Europe in Moscow, Madrid, Amsterdam, Lausanne and in Germany at Munich, which was a particular favourite of his with the finishing line in the Olympic Stadium, Dusseldorf, and Hamburg.
His best time of 3-36 was in the 2003 Midnight Sun Marathon held in Tromso, northern Norway.
He has also run inside in the Arctic Circle in the Spitsbergen Marathon.
The Norwegian island is part of the Svalbard archipelago in the Arctic Ocean.
Only 39 people took part in the event the year he ran.
