‘Please don’t cheat, although we do know that you could’

Ivan Rihoy with voting reform questionnaire.CHEATS can vote for their preferred electoral system up to four times.

States Assembly and Constitution Committee chairman Ivan Rihoy confirmed there was nothing to stop a single householder using all four votes offered on the island-wide voting consultation document.

Deputy Rihoy (pictured), whose committee will take the most popular choice to the Assembly, called for people to be honest when completing the form, which outlines three systems for island-wide voting as well as the option of retaining the status quo.

‘It’s not a foolproof system, but how else do you do it, unless you know how many are in a household and individually address them, or get people to put a name and address on each one?’ said Deputy Rihoy.

‘We thought that people would complete them in a genuine and honest way – we didn’t see it as a major problem. It costs enough without going over the top.’

Seeing that the form was designed to allow more than one person in a household to complete it, one concerned reader contacted the Guernsey Press.

They said that to get an accurate result the form should be restricted to named individuals or those on the electoral roll.

States members have also been reacting to the consultation.

Deputy Rhoderick Matthews said that none of the document’s four options would fully satisfy the public.

‘I hope the upcoming debate will not centre only around those options,’ said Deputy Matthews.
