Sticker reminder to deputies
Wednesday 30th September 2009, 2:29PM BST.
STATES members were presented with a reminder yesterday that the taxpayer expects action from them.
The Guernsey Press offered stickers to deputies as they entered the Royal Court for their monthly meeting which displayed the Wales Audit Office’s verdict on the way the island is governed.
Its report said that the States failed to meet any of the criteria to ensure taxpayers received value for money – a nought out of 10 verdict which the sticker showed.
The reminder also picked up advice from the head of the WAO, which was for islanders to lobby their deputies to act on the critical report.
Most took the initiative as a bit of fun and displayed a sense of humour, accepting the stickers and vowing to take the message seriously.
But others were less amused.
Public Accounts Committee chairman Deputy Leon Gallienne, who commissioned the WAO report, did not take a sticker but said he realised the issue.
‘I don’t need any reminding,’ he said, with a laugh.
Deputy John Gollop (pictured) took one, saying that they might remind members what needed to be done.
Culture and Leisure minister Mike O’Hara also took one. ‘I don’t disagree with it,’ he said.
He said the WAO report would hopefully encourage action.
