Cash offered to take on long-term jobless
Monday 5th October 2009, 2:29PM BST.
EMPLOYERS could be given a cash incentive to take on the long-term jobless.
Social Security is planning a recruitment grant to encourage the hiring of people who have been out of work for more than six months.
The grant would add to the range of back-to-work benefits already available to help after long-term unemployment or illness.
The maximum would be £2,500 paid over a six-month period and would include a £500 training grant – on the basis that it will take more time to train a person who has been out of work for a long time.
But employers will be required to detail what training is provided and to claim the grant they must work with the Job Centre and work rehabilitation officers during the recruitment and selection of candidates.
The grant would be paid in instalments after four, 12 and 26 weeks of employment. The training grant would be paid at four weeks.
An employer taking on someone over 30 would receive £1,000 and the £500 training grant after four weeks, with further £500 instalments at 12 and 26 weeks.
The maximum available for taking on someone under 20 is £1,300 and for someone aged 20 to 29 it is £1,900.

I had an details sent to me about the incentive scheme. I am in the local construction industry where a lot of the companies out there are actually finding it tough at the moment. How can Social Insurance offer what seems on the surface a great scheme to us all and then have a UK contractor working outside of their own building. What worries me is this could just be the start as I am also led to believe that another UK contractor is working on the repointing at Castle Cornet! when we have many excellent stonemasons locally, with skills passed down over generations. It really does beggar believe.
A Simple Guern.

this is a good idea I think BUT, those that are just pure lazy and dont want to work but see this as an opportunity to do a bit of work and bag some cash should be carefully vetted.
A scheme to be monitored and regulated carefully.
Personally I would ship all the ones that are milking the system on benefits but still somehow manage to buy state of the art t.vs mobiles etc to a boot camp then they would be glad and appreciative of this scheme by the time they had no creature comforts and their benefits ceased for the duration! There is NO excuse for alot of people not to work. Just make sure this money is invested in employing the right people. A proud Guern. Happy to work.

Hm, have I been hasty and read this incorrectly in my haste of thinking the States plan to hand out to some that don’t really deserve help.
I am all in favour of employers being helped recruiting local employees but still think they must be careful as to who they recruit

Shelly although you may have misread the article you are 100% spot on with your comments.
The problem is that the long term unemployed simply do not want to work and they expect us hard working tax payers to support their lifestyles. The majority have top of the range mobile phones, the latest tv’s, their clothes and trainers are “labels”. You only have to wlak past Social Security on a Thursday morning to see them standing outside waiting for their (sorry, OUR) money. If you don’t believe me then pop along tomorrow morning and see for yourselves.
Why have they been allowed to get away with this for so long? Why won’t anyone give us answers? When will something actually be done?
Shelly is right. Bootcamp IS the answer as these people see nothing wrong with srounging OUR money and do not care or seem to understand (although I’m sure they do) that some of us have to go without the things they take for granted. It’s high time they learned what real life is all about. I.E working and earning a wage to pay for the things you want.
