THE island’s cricketing big guns will battle it out tomorrow night as the indoor cricket league season gets underway.

Held at the new £1m. Indoor Cricket Guernsey centre at Hougue du Pommier – Cobo, Rovers, St Pierre, Grant Thornton and Wanderers all feature in Division One along with an ICG Academy side.

Cobo are looking to carry on from a successful summer that saw them win the Evening and Weekend Leagues.

‘This is a little bit more light-hearted than the real thing but we’ll still be looking to win the competition,’ said Cobo’s indoor captain, Jamie Nussbaumer.

Devised in Australia, the sport has two eight-a-side teams playing on a rectangular court enclosed by a tightly-tensioned net.

The umpires are perched above the wicketkeeper looking down on the game using microphones and electronic scoreboards.

A soft ball is used so there is no need for batsmen to wear leg pads.

The result is a fast and furious game, which beginners and experienced cricketers can enjoy.
