I might as well close, says shop owner mired in roadworks
Tuesday 6th October 2009, 2:29PM BST.
A SHOP in Vale Road is closing for two days while work on the Halfway filter is completed.
Out Of Africa owner Charles Barlow (pictured) said he would be shutting the shop for two days this week because he feared he would have no customers.
‘I will be closing Wednesday and Thursday,’ he said yesterday.
‘It has been very noisy and I have seen no one in the shop today. In fact, the only customer I have had was one of the workers, who came in to get a drink.
‘Hopefully by Friday most of the mess right outside the shop will be gone and we will be getting ready for the weekend.’
Mr Barlow was annoyed that resurfacing work on the junction was being carried out at this time.
‘Whenever there is work going on in Vale Road, it affects the business,’ he said.
‘And there is no compensation to the small businesses and we are a small business.
‘I am lucky because I am in a niche market, but even then when there is work going on I am 30-35% down.’
The shop sells South African food and other goods.
