Online survey ‘has confused people over vote options’

Ivan Rihoy with voting reform questionnaire.PEOPLE have been confused over island-wide voting options, says States Assembly and Constitution Committee chairman Ivan Rihoy.

An online survey by Submarine asked islanders to select from the four voting options put forward in a States public consultation form.

More than 400 voted and a third (35%) were in favour of the first option: 10 parish-elected deputies with the remainder chosen by island-wide election.

But Deputy Rihoy (pictured) said the options put forward had been simplified and this had led to people not fully understanding how a new system would work.

‘We are not bringing back douzaine representatives,’ he said.

‘Politicians could only be parish-elected the first time they ran.’

He said the system would help new deputies break into politics.

‘There are concerns that island-wide voting would mean that only well-known, sitting politicians would get into the States,’ he said.

‘This way new faces could come in.’

He said full details on the four options would be laid out in future consultations.

Submarine director Neil Inder said the survey had a link to the States FAQ page.

‘The politics is very complicated and we wouldn’t have sent out this survey without all the details, but some people may not have read them.’
