SARK’S treasures go under the hammer on Thursday – and islanders can see tomorrow morning what will be in the historic sale.
‘It is the first time in recent years we have had a Saturday viewing,’ said James Bridges, consultant valuer at Martel Maides Auctions.
He said that they were keen to give as many people as possible the opportunity to view around 300 lots in the sale ahead of the auction.
‘Although we do have a number of people who have registered as phone bidders, we are expecting a lot of local interest,’ said Mr Bridges.
Two lots in particular had generated significant attention – a Louis Vuitton cabin trunk and a chair cross-stitched by Dame Sibyl Hathaway.
‘The chair has an estimate of between £350 and £450 but, with its provenance, we expect it to reach considerably more,’ he said.
With lots estimated to sell between £10 to £12,000, Mr Bridges said there would be a chance for most islanders to take home something which had belonged to the historic house, La Seigneurie.
‘There is the impression that the house has been in a time warp but things have come and gone over the years. It is a proper family home,’ he said.
The sale is divided into two – those items in a trust set up by Dame Sibyl and items owned by the Beaumont family.
Money raised from trust items will go towards a number of Sark charities.
