Marina oil spill not GE’s only pollution of Bridge marina

GUERNSEY ELECTRICITY had to clean boats in St Sampson’s Harbour after one of its generators discharged soot over nearby vessels.
It was one of two clean-up operations in six days for the States-owned utility after oil from a tank on one of its generators leaked into the marina last Tuesday.
Several boat owners on the Wednesday before found their vessels covered in a black substance after the malfunction.
The company’s engineering director Steve Morris (pictured) apologised for any inconvenience.
‘On Wednesday 30 September an abnormal condition on one of the C Station generators caused a release of soot, some of which landed on boats in St Sampson’s Marina, causing minor staining,’ he said. ‘With the cooperation of boat owners, GEL staff and contractors have cleaned affected boats.’
He was unable to say how much the clean-up had cost.
Director of environmental health and pollution regulation Val Cameron said an environmental health officer attended the marina to investigate a complaint about a sticky deposit on some of the boats.
‘GE said they had been undertaking turbine cleaning works, which could have led to a release from the chimney. There are no implications for public health from this emission or from the deposits on the boats,’ he said.
One of the boat owners who contacted the Guernsey Press said the substance should have been analysed to ensure it was safe.

Quote “There are no implications for public health from this emission or from the deposits on the boats,’ he said.!
if this is the case why do these emission’s
stain gell coat on the boats and on painted
surfaces actually burn the paint,
having been involved with Diesels for 30 odd years, i have found that diesel soot is not the nicest thing to
inhale
maybe GE should be fined every time they pollute the enviroment, perhaps on par with enviroments plans for car owners

How do the States or the Electric Company know that the emissions was not harmful to our health. The States have no scientific instruments to measure the soot. They have to rely on the manufacturers word that smoke and rubbish coming out of their chimneys are not harmful. So, do you not think it is time you obtained the relevant tools to protect the people, especially as we are supposed to have a dirty big incinerator as well.
