Pay freeze letter: hard to predict effect, says PSRC chief

Monday 12th October 2009, 2:29PM BST.

Allister LangloisA DECISION by the island’s most senior civil servant to freeze his own wages could have an impact on some workers, the chairman of the States pay negotiating body has said.

But Deputy Allister Langlois (pictured) said the move by States chief executive Mike Brown would not make the job of the Public Sector Remuneration Committee any easier and believed nothing else could.

He did know beforehand that Mr Brown was going to take such a step.

‘As chief executive it is absolutely right that he should provide that guidance if he feels it is appropriate,’ said Deputy Langlois.

In an unprecedented move, Mr Brown wrote to thousands of States staff urging them not to ask for too big a pay rise.

He said the island’s precarious financial state was forcing him to take action.

Deputy Langlois said it was difficult to predict what the impact of the action would be.
