Scrutiny to act upon Wales Audit findings

Monday 12th October 2009, 2:29PM BST.

Jeremy ColmanTHE Scrutiny Committee is determined to force action on deficiencies in government identified by the Wales Audit Office.

It has pledged to make sure there are recommendations made to address the problems identified, even if no one else does.

The Public Accounts Committee, which commissioned the corporate governance investigation, has already said it was not appropriate for it to ensure there were recommendations.

The Policy Council has also declined to – the majority of ministers want to use the findings to measure the pace of change against.

Scrutiny’s principal officer, Alysa Martel, said Auditor-General for Wales Jeremy Colman (pictured) was keen to point out that the report was about good governance and that could be achieved within the current system.

‘The committee is firmly of the belief that the States needs to sign up to a commitment to improving its corporate governance,’ she said.

‘As part of that, the WAO report and findings need to be taken to some recommendations. Because PAC said it would not do it, the Scrutiny Committee said that if no one else does, it will.’

Scrutiny chairman Barry Brehaut said the WAO report needed to be given some direction. ‘We think Scrutiny could do something with the report to give it a steer,’ said Deputy Brehaut.

He said it was important there was something people could be held accountable to with performance indicators.
