States members will get their zero-10 debate

Tuesday 20th October 2009, 1:00PM BST.

Lyndon TrottTHE States will next Tuesday discuss whether to scrap zero-10.

The Policy Council yesterday unanimously agreed that the Assembly should have the opportunity for a debate.

A report has been prepared and approved by the council and is now being printed.

It should be published on Friday.

Chief Minister Lyndon Trott believes corporation tax will now need to be applied at between 10 and 12.5% to overcome the concerns.

‘It’s important that we give the EU a commitment,’ said Deputy Trott (pictured).

‘We were already intending to review our taxation regime – that was decided back in July. This is basically an extension of that review, which is predicated on the fact that the zero underlying basic rate of corporation tax will change.’

He said the States report was short and embraced all the issues already in the public domain.

The States will be asked to support a recommendation, but because of protocol the details will not be released until the end of the week.

Sounds a bit like someone saying they built a house a couple of years ago, with a rather unconventional design, and they’re tweaking bits – perhaps changing the style of window, adding a patio, different curtains. Then they decide to demolish the whole thing (perhaps they didn’t have planning permission!) and try to say it’s just part of the tweaking.
