Vacation variation

BOJAN KURAJICA may give the impression he is on holiday – but he clearly means business.
The amiable Croatian grandmaster (pictured) is making his second appearance at the annual Intertrust Guernsey International Chess Festival at the Peninsula Hotel after taking part last year.
Not surprisingly, he won his opening day match with Dutch player Jacques Kamps, of the Netherlands, who has a Fide rating of 2,033 compared to Kurajica’s 2,517.
The Guernsey Press caught up with him enjoying a lunchtime glass of red wine yesterday before he met Kevin Thurlow of England.
‘I’m very pleased – so far, so good,’ he said.
‘The atmosphere here is very nice and I find Guernsey very quaint. I like this island. There is no hussle and bustle.’
Kurajica was crowned the world junior champion in 1965 and was awarded the grandmaster title in 1974.
