Two major shocks

Wednesday 21st October 2009, 2:29PM BST.

Chess at the PeninsulaTWO shock results dominated day three of the 35th Intertrust Guernsey International Chess Festival, as both grandmaster Oleg Korneev and international master Robert Bellin lost their matches against amateur opposition.

IM Bellin fell victim to Samuel Franklin, a 15-year-old rising star from England in a ferocious attacking battle.

Meanwhile, it appeared that grandmaster Korneev had reached a drawn position against Wolfgang Mack, but decided to push for a win and over-stretched himself.

The grandmaster’s German opponent seized his opportunity and held his nerve to secure a remarkable victory.

Mack, who is making his first visit to the festival, comes from Biberach – a city with substantial links to Guernsey, stemming from the island families who were moved there during the Occupation.

By contrast to their fellow professionals, grandmasters Bojan Kurajica and Tiger Hillarp-Persson won in comfortable fashion.

Hillarp-Persson’s remorseless attack against Guido Goessling of Germany provided the afternoon’s best entertainment for the highly knowledgeable crowd gathered around the top board.

Among the local competitors in the open tournament, one of the festival’s veterans proved too strong for its organiser, as Jan Havenaar overcame FIDE master Fred Hamperl.
