Support grows for greater independence from the UK
Saturday 24th October 2009, 2:29PM BST.
A CAMPAIGN for increasing independence from the UK gathered momentum yesterday as ministers opened the door for further debate.
After overwhelming support was given to the idea at a public meeting on Thursday night, the Policy Council’s External Relations Group considered the issue yesterday.
‘We are now waiting for correspondence from Advocate Roger Perrot [who led the call for more autonomy] to Policy Council,’ said group chairman Deputy Bernard Flouquet.
‘Once we have received that, we will discuss the most appropriate way forward.’
Advocate Perrot believes Guernsey should have more control over its laws and representation on the international stage.
And most of an estimated 400 people backed him on Thursday.
Deputy Flouquet (pictured) said the impression he received from speaking to Advocate Perrot immediately after the meeting at St James was that the necessary documents would be with the Policy Council very soon.
Deputy Dave Jones, a long-time supporter of making Guernsey more independent, would support discussions with the UK if the Policy Council took it to the States.

Good Luck Guernsey and I wish you well. The last thing the Island needs is more control from the UK. Don’t let those useless UK Politicians bring you down like they have with the UK.

Well John
I have noticed that England is getting what it deserves: The Scots aren’t big enough to fight off the English–
But the Scots are canny; there was no need to have an army to bring them down: Just one man.
Gordon Brown has done an excellent job; and he hasn’t finished yet, Oh no. he’ll really put the screws on now, he hasn’t a lot of time left.
‘And should he by some miracle not lose the coming election. then the last nails will be banged in.

What has England done to get ‘what it deserves’, Eric? And what is it ‘getting’now? Do you mean that England itself is now a British colony with no hope of home rule? I thought the Guernsey campaign for greater independence was against the UK rather than England.

No Ian
Just England; the rest are like us overun by those Anglo Saxons.
They were never British; they stole that from the Brits.
