ABOUT 150 people turned out at Vazon on Saturday to support the International Day of Climate Action.
The group formed a circle while a high-level photograph was taken that will be seen across the world.
The image was aimed at raising awareness of the support for political action to tackle climate change.
It will be one of many sent to world leaders due to debate the subject in Copenhagen next month and displayed in New York’s Times Square.
‘This is an opportunity for us to show not only our local politicians but political leaders throughout the world that there’s a desire amongst the ordinary person for direction from the top,’ said event co-organiser Rosie Dorey.
‘We want a meaningful and fair agreement to come out of Copenhagen to ensure that we tackle the critical nature of climate change before it’s too late.
‘We are incredibly lucky to live in a part of the world where we have so much and live such comfortable lives.
‘It’s right and proper that we show our concern for those who live in far more vulnerable parts of the world than us, though as an island we will also suffer.
‘We depend on food and staple crops that come from parts of the world which are vulnerable to drought and floods and it means our food security is at risk.’
The initiative was called 350.org, the figure representing the parts per million of carbon dioxide with which the atmosphere can safely cope.
