Green houses to halve fuel bills
Tuesday 27th October 2009, 2:29PM GMT.

Guernsey Housing Association chief executive Steve Williams, left, and Housing minister Deputy Dave Jones are both delighted with Sir John Leale Avenue. (0863107)
The 58 properties off Victoria Avenue are the first major environmentally-friendly build for the Guernsey Housing Association, which worked with the Housing Department on the project.
It has cost £7.5m. and is currently on time and on budget. The first residents began moving in this week.
Mr Williams was pleased with how the build had progressed and said future GHA developments were likely to also use green technology.
‘We expect this to half owners’ fuel bills,’ he said. ‘But it is also beneficial to the environment. We are looking to use this technology in Le Clouet and Mont Arrive when the sites are redeveloped.’
The homes have water butts to catch rainwater as well as solar panels to heat domestic hot water.
There is also a panel so householders can see how much electricity they use every hour. That information is then used to calculate how much it costs to pay for it.

These houses are great but why is it just 1 or 2 bedrooms houses they seem to be focusing on, there is a great need for 3 bedrooms as well.

The answer to your question is that we are desperately short of 1&2 bedroom homes we do have plenty of 3&4 bedroom properties the trouble is that they were being under occupied by couples whose families have left home but could not move as we had nothing smaller to move them to. In order to free up these family homes for those on our waiting list. This is what this new development at VA and the smaller units of accommodation on the old bus garage site were built for, primarily to address the under occupation issue.
The Man
I agree with you about modern plastic windows verses drafty wooden ones but that is the fault of the Environment department not housing.

This is very strange. They build 58 houses at 7.5 million. Before the States joined forces with the Housing Assn, and started the mass evictions, the States were making 3.5 million a year in profit from States housing, and they stated that they could not afford to build any new houses.

Hi Dave
Sorry, I dont want you to think I was attacking you, I was aware that its (the ironically named) Environment that are refusing PVC windows for my house.
Just using this to vent my frustration at the impending winter of crazy bills :(

Is it not perfectly possible to have new double or triple glazed wooden windows?
