Mail strike yet to have impact
Tuesday 27th October 2009, 2:29PM GMT.
BUSINESSES have remained upbeat despite last week’s strike action by Royal Mail workers.
Mail to and from the Bailiwick was affected when postal workers walked out on Thursday and Friday.
Talks yesterday between Royal Mail and union leaders were adjourned until today.
If a deal is not reached, more walkouts are planned for Thursday, Friday and Saturday.
But the national disruption seems to have had little impact locally.
A spokesman for HMV, which has its internet fulfillment operation in Guernsey, said it had not lost many sales.
‘We didn’t find that the level of ordering went down, people seem to be going ahead with their requests. Everyone is hoping it [the industrial action] is just a glitch,’ he said.
On Sunday, Royal Mail chief executive Adam Crozier warned that the strike would spell the end of Christmas cards.
But Le Lievre’s shop assistant Jane Robert said it had not seen a drop in the number of customers buying cards. ‘Most people who buy cards will just send them earlier.’
