EXTRA mature cheddar produced by the Guernsey Dairy has won a silver medal at this year’s World Cheese Awards.
This follows the award of bronze medal for its mild cheese at the 2009 British Cheese Awards.
The world competition was staged in Las Palmas, Gran Canaria, and attracted cheeses from 34 countries.
More than 150 judges from 24 countries, including Mexico, South Africa, Japan and Australia, sampled the 2,440 entries before choosing the winners.
The range of premium Guernsey cheeses also has a new outer wrap that connects to the existing range of rebranded products introduced earlier in the year.
Dairy general manager Andrew Tabel said: ‘This award comes just as our re-branded cheeses hit the shelves of local supermarkets.
‘This contemporary design will complement our other products which include butter, cream, ice cream and, of course, milk.’

Now that Guernsey dairy produces something the rest of the World appreciates, how about exporting some of it? The last time I enquired, GD had total annual exports of £0.00. How about putting in a bit more effort to secure the future of our beautiful herds?

Gache – we can buy GDs fantastic butter here in East Sussex via ‘Waitrose’, Lewes, does that count as abroad ? Maybe not. It would be nice to see the award winning cheese on the same shelf though. How about it GD ?

Yes, that’s abroad enough for me Brian! Sounds like GD’s Sales & Marketing Dept. have either had a massive push or simply sent a case of butter to the wrong address! It is actually made at Gurnsey Dairy and not just produced by Guernsey or Jersey herds which can be based anywhere?
