Pumpkin carving a charity hit

SATURDAY’S pumpkin carving in Town was so successful more had to be delivered.

‘We had ordered 50 pumpkins for this morning and have had to order another 50 already and it’s not even lunchtime yet,’ said Rotary Guernesiais president Rod Goldsbrough.

‘The children have loved getting involved and we have provided recipes for pumpkin soup and pumpkin pie so they can use up the flesh of their pumpkin when they get home.’

The event was to mark Halloween and to raise money for the Guernsey Cheshire Home.

Rotary Guernesiais set up a stall in Market Square where children could buy a pumpkin and get creative.

The idea to carve pumpkins in the street came from a member of Rotary’s fund-raising committee, said Mr Goldsbrough.

She had seen it being done in various parts of the UK and thought it would be a great way of getting children involved with fund-raising.

He said the event was a chance for them to have a bit of fun, but also to raise money for a very good cause.

‘We haven’t had to pull in a crowd and I think Halloween is becoming more popular,’ he said.

Rotary Guernsesiais has been raising money to buy an ex-NHS modified and converted vehicle for the home. Mr Goldsbrough said it had raised £8,000 but the vehicle might cost up to around £10,000.

How disappointing then, that you were not so community minded at the Friquet that afternoon, when having escorted disabled people into the centre you then left your cars for the whole time you were there, in the places reserved for disabled drivers who wanted to be there as independent visitors, and had the unpleasant experience of negotiating a very wet, muddy, slippery general car park in order to do so.
