SURGEON Ranjan Vhadra has won the 2009 Schroders Bright Ideas Competition.
His Tenease device, which treats and heals tennis elbow, was chosen by the six mentors as the standout business idea on show in the final at St James last night.
Susan Watson, owner of Sofsync Ltd and creator of the Carbon Footprint Counter, was joint runner-up alongside accountant Matt Godfrey and his one-stop online cricket resource centre, LegBefore.com.
All three made it through to the final question-and-answer session after polling the most votes from a 500-strong audience after all seven finalists had given 10-minute presentations on their business ideas.
Speaking after he was named as winner of the £5,000 prize by Lt-Governor Sir Fabian Malbon, Mr Vhadra (pictured) said he was elated.
He also paid tribute to his wife, Liz, for putting up with his ‘harebrained’ ideas for the past 21 years, as well as praising his fellow entrants.
‘I thought the other competitors had fantastic ideas and really showed a lot of passion, so I feel very privileged to have won. And because I’ve won I now feel an even greater responsibility to make this product a success.’
The device received its Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency approval less than two weeks ago, which means Mr Vhadra can start selling and marketing it.
