IT WAS a case of so close, but yet so far for Nashcopy as they reached the men’s final of the weekend’s Guernsey Volleyball Tournament.
They became the first Guernsey men’s side for years to reach the final on Sunday afternoon at Beau Sejour.
But their hopes of crowning glory were dashed when they came up against the very strong Anglesey side, wich has picked up a number of men’s titles in the 24-year history of the competition.
‘It’s been a while since we’ve been in the final so it was certainly an achievement getting there,’ said Nashcopy captain Martin Baker.
The final went to the visitors 25-21, 25-12.
‘They have normally got a good all-round side,’ said Baker.
‘It’s good for us to play against people like that because we don’t often get to do it.
‘[Over the weekend] we played good and bad in patches.
‘We’re not used to playing at that standard but we did ourselves justice in the end.’
However, the whole weekend did not go Anglesey’s way as they lost the women’s final to Reading Devils 25-15, 25-18, and the mixed to Ashcombe 20-25, 25-14 and 15-7.
