States Works fielded more than 30 calls in two hours as floods struck across the island yesterday morning.
Almost an inch (24mm) of rain fell between midnight and noon and drains – many blocked by leaves – could not cope.
Chaos ensued with junctions such as the Camp du Roi traffic lights flooded along with roads including Route des Coutanchez, Talbot Valley and Route des Sages, St Peter’s.
States Works general manager Nigel Dorey said five teams of men were on standby to deal with the problem areas.
‘Quite a lot of drains have been blocked up with leaves so some have easily gone down once the leaves have been removed,’ he said.
‘I think because rain fell short and sharp many of the drains could not deal with the deluge.’
Yesterday’s floods were the worst his teams had seen this year, he said.
‘We had a similar situation either last week or two weeks ago, but not quite as bad as this.
