Guernsey 3, Jersey 3 (aet, Jersey win on penalties)
GUERNSEY suffered yet more penalty shootout misery in a Muratti as Jersey won back the Ambassadeur Bowl on Saturday.
The home side had played excellently for the majority of the 120 minutes at a wet and extremely windy Blanche Pierre Lane, yet errors cost them dearly.
‘We were by far the better side. In commitment, attitude and ability we had the edge both with and against the wind,’ said Guernsey coach Tony Vance.
‘The negatives are that we should have put them to bed in the first half and all three of their goals came from our mistakes. A pleasing thing is that we created our three goals, but we should have scored more.
‘We played for the last 40 minutes virtually with 10 men because Matt Loaring pulled his hamstring and we had no subs left. I guess that makes the performance better, but it is still disappointing because we had played all our cards and couldn’t do anything about it.’
Having taken a 2-0 lead after half an hour through a magnificent solo effort from Scott Bougourd and a Mark Ramsden free-kick, the hosts could not hold on to a clean sheet in the first half when the had a strong wind at their backs as Luke Campbell’s fine header gave Jersey a big boost at half-time.
Substitute Steven Reid took the game into extra-time with the only goal of the second half before he gave Jersey the lead for the first time against the run of play with just six minutes of extra-time left.

I watched the game Saturday and Tony Vance is being very big headed about his team. Geurnsey weren’t as good as they’ve been made out to be. The commitment and attitude shown by Jersey was far better. To go two nil down and then bring it back took courage, determination and grit. So i think Tony Vance needs to re think his comments and maybe someone should deflate his head a little bit.

Tony Vance is always the first to believe his own greatness…..
Whose fault is it that you had used all your subs and had to play for 40 minutes with an injured player Mr Vance?
I get the impression that the Guernsey players at all levels are starting to get a bit fed up with Mr Vance.

“Whose fault is it that you had used all your subs and had to play for 40 minutes with an injured player Mr Vance?”
I’d suggest nobody’s fault, unless the player concerned was fouled causing the injury – in which case one could possibly blame the opposing player.
I don’t follow Guernsey football personally, so can’t comment on Tony Vance’s capabilities as a manager. I don’t think it’s fair to blame him for one of his players getting injured after he’d used all his substitutes. That sounds like a bit of a cheap shot to me, as not even the likes of Fergie and Wenger can plan for injuries sustained during the game!

My point was that he had used all of his substitutes with a large portion of the game remaining. As you quite rightly point out, if all 3 substitutions were injury-related then fair enough – but I would doubt that they were. By throwing all his eggs in one basket so hastily, it is his fault the team had to play with a handicap for 40 minutes.
