FORMER La Mare de Carteret head teacher Jenny Tasker is promising to fight to redevelop her old school as a new member of its committee.

Senior St Peter Port constable Mrs Tasker, who retired in 2001, faced stiff opposition in the parish elections last night from douzeniers Dennis Le Moignan and Rhoderick Matthews to gain the position but managed to win by 10 votes.

She was looking forward to working with her old school.

‘I am very pleased to have won,’ she said. ‘I’m looking forward to seeing how the school has developed and how the pupils from St Peter Port have integrated.’

She said it was important the school was redeveloped soon. ‘They are facing continuing problems, which the school had when I left,’ she said. ‘Hopefully I will be able to support them and help get it redeveloped.’

She said she was looking forward to working with the school’s new head teacher, Ken Wheeler, who took on the job in September.

Nearly 300 voters turned out for the contested douzaine election.

Keith Fisher, 64, missed out on a seat by just six votes. ‘I am disappointed,’ he said. ‘But I congratulate the elected douzeniers and wish them every success and IÊalso thank all those who took the time to vote for me.’

‘I will stand again. It is my ambition to be part of the parish.’

Douzaine vice-dean John Roper was pleased with the turnout of 3.5% of the electorate.
