Hands off

Geoff WillsonBOAT builder Geoff Willson wants action taken against a Chinese motorboat builder that is using the name of his Guernsey business.

The Aqua-Star managing director has spent months trying to put pressure on Jiangsu-based Suzhou Aquastar Yachts Ltd to change its name, but has so far got nowhere.

He even wrote to Madam Fu Ying, the Chinese ambassador to the UK, for her help following her visit to the island earlier this month.

But Mr Willson (pictured) has been left baffled by what he sees as a reluctance on the part of Commerce and Employment to help him any further than offering the use of offices in Shanghai.

‘The way to tackle this is at ambassadorial level, particularly when Madam Fu Ying has expressed her wish to help Guernsey. I think it’s up to the minister in Guernsey to take her up on that offer for the benefit of a company in Guernsey that helps to boost its economy.’

But a spokesman for Commerce and Employment said that while the department was sympathetic to Mr Willson’s concerns, it was essentially a commercial matter.

However, it could, through its business relations within China, make offices and meeting rooms available in Shanghai for Guernsey companies.

Go on, it’s April fools day come early, isn’t it?

“…a spokesman for Commerce and Employment said that while the department was sympathetic to Mr. Wilson’s concerns, it was essentially a commercial matter”.

A “commercial” matter as in “commerce” as in “Commerce and Employment”? Why else does this department exist if not to help people who are in commerce when they have international problems such as this?

Why else does Lyndon Trott go to China if not to work on issues like this?

Geoff Wilson must be seething – the Finance Industry receives massive support from Mr. Trott and his cohorts but when one of the commercial businesses needs help they are told it is essentially a commercial matter.

    It’s laughable.

    An excellent post.

However I would end by saying it’s distressing that such a statement could be made someone by Commerce and Employment.

Having said that I fully understand your comment “it’s laughable” especially when the taxpayer pays these clowns.

Or is it a case of not rocking the boat? (no pun intended)
