Bulk mailer group backs Coates attack on post service

Rodney BrouardBULK mailers have backed Derek Coates in his criticism of Guernsey Post.

Guernsey Bulk Mailers’ Association president Rodney Brouard (pictured) said changes were needed at the States-owned utility. ‘Having spoken to the members of the association, I would agree in principle with what Derek Coates stated,’ he said.

‘It is disappointing to see that the overheads of Guernsey Post have gone up so high at a time when the incoming mail has reduced by 16%, which is what Gordon Steele [Guernsey Post chief executive] said.’

In a submission to the Office of Utility Regulation, Healthspan founder Mr Coates threatened to pull its postal operations out of the island if Guernsey Post did not become competitive.

The regulator is looking to open up the market to competition and Mr Coates warned bulk mailers could depart for more-competitive jurisdictions and Mr Brouard agreed.

‘I certainly think some of the bulk mailers could leave,’ he said. ‘It’s very concerning. I think it’s possible that people could get a better deal in Jersey, for example. Jersey Post seems to be much more proactive.’

Mr Brouard wanted to make it clear that the industry had no problem with postmen. Issues concerned the way Guernsey Post was managed, he said.
