Just two departments return excess cash

Wednesday 25th November 2009, 2:29PM GMT.

Charles ParkinsonONLY two States departments have returned their unspent balances to general revenue.

Treasury and Resources asked all departments and committees to consider handing funds back that were leftover after 2009 expenditure had been taken into account.

So far, of those with excess cash, just Environment and Commerce and Employment have given money back – £500,000 and £1.2m. respectively.

It is anticipated that the remaining departments and committees will have about £11m. in money saved from previous budgets by the start of 2010.

About £6m. has been budgeted to be used next year, leaving about £5m. that could be returned to Treasury to help with the island’s £42m. ‘black hole’.

The States has directed Treasury to review the current system whereby departments can retain unspent balances and the department will report back to the Assembly as part of its 2011 Budget.

Treasury minister Charles Parkinson (pictured) said the system had to change. ‘It is heartening to see that two States departments have already agreed to return some of their unspent balances and others have committed to reviewing the balance at the end of this year,’ he said.

I bet many luxurious wish list, non essential, items are preventing huge sums being returned!

What a load of dung they try to put over on the people,

Bet those who overspent are not so quick in coming forward.

It’s time that a complete neutral person checked each part of our so called politicians.

They are as bad as their count part in Whitehall. GRABBERS.

I look forward to the string of States Departments rushing to spend their unspent balances at the end of the year before they are forced to hand it back to the Treasury Department.

I bet that all those companies that supply the States are already rubbing their hands in anticipation!

    Who mentioned corruption?
Not me; said the fairy kings and queens.

I only use what we need to make life comfortable for myself and comrades in arms.

Please can we have some more; I know; tax those peasants a little more, then we can live as we want too.
