Blue Islands to put case for Bristol route

Friday 27th November 2009, 1:00PM GMT.

blue islandsBLUE ISLANDS will get the chance to explain why it should be allowed to operate on the Bristol route.

The airline applied in March for a licence for a service to compete with Aurigny.

It wants to fly twice a day to the south-western city and will have the opportunity to put its case at a public Commerce and Employment air transport licence hearing next week.

Aurigny currently operates a single daily service to Bristol and Blue Islands said that was not enough.

‘Bristol is an important city and one of the largest business centres in the south. This fits naturally within our philosophy to serve the business centres of Europe,’ said a spokesman. ‘We also believe that the tourist and leisure market can be stimulated through this gateway to the west and south-west of England.

‘Blue Islands will be providing a twice-daily morning and evening service. This will improve opportunities for islanders and inbound UK travellers, benefiting the Guernsey leisure and business sectors.’

The airline said Aurigny had cut back its operations on the route and there was a real opportunity for the island to benefit from a second operator.

This would be a brilliant route to have running more frequently. Currently travellers from Wales and the west have the choice of Bristol or travelling to Southampton or London for frequent flights to Guernsey. With Cardiff City centre becoming one of the shopping capitals of Europe we do need more competitive flights from Guernsey to this area.

If Cardiff city centre is becomeing one of the shopping captals of Europe why not start a service there! Oh yes they did a few years ago and pulled out through lack of support (and price)
Why do these airlines act as predators on these thin routes. Flybe on Manchester and now Blue Islands on Bristol. I suppose it’s easier to poach traffic from an established route than to develop a new route. So much for Commerce and employment trying to encourage new routes. What about Dublin and Paris. What happened there? Blue Island have the aircraft to service these routes. Why not try them. A smaller aircraft i.e. the ATR 42 they have might just grow the route rather than the bigger Dash 8.

I do wish they would fund a route to Cardiff as it would make guernsey so much more accesible to us. Flybe is Cardiff’s airline now and I got very excited, until i learnt they had no intention of flying to Guernsey and only fly to Jersey three times a week March – September.
