GROW and buy Guernsey produce is the emphasis of this year’s annual report and year book of the Guernsey Growers’ Association.
Articles and comments on the subject can be found on most pages, including a contribution from States Agriculture and Environment adviser Andrew Casebow.
Dealing with the potential adjustments brought on by climate change, the writer suggests that one effect could be the revitalisation of the farming and growing industry.
‘Already there is a resurgence of interest in good quality locally produced food,’ he says.
He adds that most main crop potatoes sold in the island are locally produced and growers are providing a wide range of vegetables and salad crops.
Local fruit is also available.
‘The impact of supermarkets and other retail outlets in supporting local producers should not be underestimated, while others have found a ready market for locally grown meat, dairy products, eggs, poultry and vegetable crops through the now well-established farmers’ markets,’ he says.
The GGA offers its thanks to the growers who are supporting the move by using the ‘Guernsey Grown’ labels.

Yes, all veggies, and as much fruit as possible that is eaten locally should be grown locally.
For instance, do we really know where and how our imported veggies and fruit are grow? I don’t think so and I for one will not – and will never – eat veggies or fruit that are grown in and imported from Mexico much of whom’s irrigation water is extremely polluted.
On principal, neither will I purchase and eat such items as garlic and peppers from China.
My God, Guernsey’s earth, water and air is fabulous for growing! More of it should be done. Forget those useless green lawns and grow veggies!!

All this hype about the public buying local and what do they do bring in the French market, strange!
