A NUMBER of players staked their claims for a place in the rugby inter-insular on Saturday when they featured in the Island Select’s defeat of the London Cornish Touring Side.

The Greens will look to retain their inter-insular crown when they meet Jersey on 31 January.

They played fantastically to win last year’s encounter at an incredibly cold Foote’s Lane, 14-10.

And they produced the goods at the weekend to claim the spoils over the Cornish exiles.

The squad of 25 Island Select players were made up of Guernsey Seconds, Vets and St Jacques players.

‘This match was a great opportunity to bring together players from St Jacques and Guernsey for the first time in preparation for the inter-insular against Jersey,’ said coach Chris Griffiths (pictured) .

‘We had managed only one training session together on the Thursday night before the game so I was very pleased with how quickly players from both clubs gelled on the pitch. And the performances I watched offered some strong clues as to who will probably make the final squad.’
