‘Piper’ can’t bale out Pompey now
Saturday 5th December 2009, 2:30PM GMT.
GEOFF ‘PIPER’ LE LACHEUR will not be helping to bale out his beloved Portsmouth this time.
The 63-year-old Pompey-mad supporter (pictured) , who’s nickname comes from his favourite player to grace Fratton Park, Norman Piper, donated money to the club when they hit the skids during the 1970s.
This week they are again in the headlines after failing to pay their players’ wages. But this time, Le Lacheur, who retired as a postman after 32 years of service last October, will not be putting his hand in his pocket to try and help them out in their latest financial crisis.
‘No – I’ve got a family now and I go and see them twice a season,’ he said.
‘It’s the club’s fault, by paying players inflated wages. Sol Campbell was on £90,000 a week or something stupid like that.’
Things were a lot different at Portsmouth in 1976-1977 season when they found themselves with their backs against the wall.
Under the management of Ian St John, the south coast club had just been relegated to the third division and in November 1976 they urgently needed to raise £25,000, which equates to more than £134,000 in today’s money, to stay afloat.
Le Lacheur was stirred into action and he sent the club what he could, which was £50.
