IT is time for islanders to get their skates on.

Market Square will be transformed into a huge ice rink from Saturday and a specialist team will be hard at work this week installing it.

A team of 10 arrived on Friday to begin work on the Sure skate rink. Three trailers arrived in the Square at just after 5am on Saturday morning and were unloaded by 9.30am.

‘The Square was just full of equipment. We normally have a lot more space, so logistically it was an absolute nightmare, but once that was out of the way it was a dream. This is a terrific spot for us to be,’ said James Evans, managing director of Everything Ice Ltd.

He said a town centre location was by far the best.

‘They are definitely my favourite. This scenario – being right in the middle of a town – is perfect and it is great for people to see the set-up,’ he said.

The pool, measuring 12.5 by 20 metres, will gradually be filled with 45,000 litres of frozen water.
