LIKE the fourth plinth in Trafalgar Square it has always been empty. And like its London counterpart had throughout summer, it is about to get a cutting-edge makeover.
But whereas England’s capital had Antony Gormley’s One and Other project, where the artist invited a different person to occupy the plinth every hour, 24 hours a day for 100 days, St Peter Port’s vacant Market Square plinth is getting the full artistic treatment from eight College of Further Education second year BTEC art and design students.
It all started at the beginning of the autumn term, when they were commissioned by the Guernsey Arts Committee to produce sculptural ideas for the plinth, which is opposite the entrance to HMV.
First the students researched, measured and photographed the granite edifice, making up one-tenth scale replicas.
They then designed a sculpture to go on it. This was presented to the GAC’s public art sub-committee, which was delighted with the results.
Well, here are their ideas – what do you think?
