CHRISTMAS has come early for Guernsey’s skateboarders and BMX riders.
Permission has finally been granted to construct a skate park in the island – and the Guernsey X-Treme Sports Association is thrilled by the news.
Association chairman Mike O’Hara said plans for the facility had involved long talks between the Environment Department and experts in the field leading to the approved site at Beau Sejour.
‘I am absolutely delighted that at long last we have something positive for all those youngsters who have waited so patiently to gain a skate park that they desperately want,’ he said.
Deputy O’Hara said that the help the association had from officers at Environment and the Environmental Health inspectors had been invaluable and appreciated.
He said work would begin to develop full details for the park – which will be where the current children’s play area is – and raise the money to build it, an estimated £200,000.

Thrilled with this news. Managed to get down to Beau Sejour to hear the news from the horses mouth, fantastic to hear. Three cheers for Mr. O’Hara i say!!
The only thing i would ask now is that skaters are consulted properly on what to build and how to build it.
I understand from Mr O’Hara it’s not going to be covered… it’s disappointing, but understandable given the costs involved in roofing an area that large.
Fingers crossed a properly graded concrete surface will be quick drying.
Does anybody know who’s undertaking the work as well? And when plans are due to be drawn up?
More information would be fantastic, especially via mailing list etc… I only found out about the announcement via Facebook!!

ITV news just suggested that funding won’t be coming from the states? Anybody know facts?

That’s great news for the skateboarders, but does anyone know where the children’s play area is being moved to, or if it is being moved at all?

@Sarah Carter – I’m not sure what will happen to the children’s play area. However IF they decide to remove it and not replace it, personally I wouldn’t have a problem as there are already alternative children’s play areas on the island (Saumarez Park, Delancey Park as well as various “child friendly” places such as Olivers) but currently no skate park. We live on a small island and need to use the finite space wisely to attempt (as far as we can) to accommodate all sections of the community.
PS I am a town resident and a parent of a young child; I don’t skate or BMX either – so I have no vested interest in a skate park! :-)
