Eggo ends long wait with nail-biting island final win
Tuesday 22nd December 2009, 2:29PM GMT.
THE Eggo name has been engraved on the Island Championship trophy many times, but this year it had a new initial to it.
It had been a long wait for Andy (pictured) , the younger brother of Guernsey’s best ever player Bobby, to claim the coveted prize, but he finally did it at the end of a fantastic week in May.
His final with Danny Blondel was the seventh 36-hole showpiece Eggo had played in and the see-saw battle went the full distance.
The biggest lead either player had was just two holes and they were all square at lunch.
But the pivotal moment came on the 35th hole where Eggo chipped his second to within six feet and holed the putt to edge ahead before halving the last in pars.
On the 18th green, Blondel had a 15ft birdie putt to take the match to extra holes, but with Eggo unable to watch, it stayed above ground.
Cue the congratulations for Eggo, with his elder sibling the first spectator to offer his hand.
