C&W Sure is unhappy at Airtel’s advertising

Monday 28th December 2009, 2:30PM GMT.

paul taylorSURE has attacked Airtel-Vodafone over its advertising, claiming that it is misleading pay-as-you-go customers.

Its concern is over adverts Airtel-Vodafone is running which compare the cost of calls on its network with those of Sure and Wave Telecom.

Sure says Airtel-Vodafone is not making it clear that the two charge for calls in a different way.

‘On the face of it, Airtel-Vodafone is cheaper but what customers won’t realise is that for all calls they make with Airtel-Vodafone they will be charged by the minute, compared to Sure, who charge by the second for all local calls,’ said Sure marketing director Paul Taylor (pictured).

‘It might only be a small difference if you take one call in isolation, but over time it could be considerable.’

Mr Taylor said a 30-second local call to a Sure mobile would cost one of its customers 5p. Sure’s per minute charge is 10p, but local calls are charged by the second.

The same 30-second call would cost an Airtel-Vodafone customer on the Islander tariff 8p.

oh dear, looks like cable & wireless finally and inevitably have started to try and slur their competitors names. I wondered how long it would be before they realised that what they purchased from the States all those years ago was a company not a monopoly. Fancy them having to compete against others !!! Good luck to the operator that gives me the best deal i say. I honestly am glad someone can seriously compete against them (no offence meant there jersey telecom/Wave)

I bought one of Airtel’s Guernsey home phones. Now I wonder where all my credit has gone.

Turns out they are charging for free 0800 numbers at 5p per minute.

In the UK companies that charge for free numbers make an announcement that they are not free. Airtel should do so too.

And they don’t even list the price of 0800 numbers on their website at all.

I complained and they said they’d change the website. Let’s see how long it takes them to do it.

Cable and Wireless (Sure) taking over our local telecoms provider for a song (thus enabling them to filter the aforementioned ‘local’ company’s profits out of the island) was bad enough, and now we have this third, entirely unnecessary telecoms giant crowbarring itself and it’s myriad of ugly masts into our tiny island so it can, to paraphrase the words of it’s illustrious CEO based in India, ‘use the CI’s as a stepping stone into Europe’.

I use C & W essentially because I have to (for certain services) but I will NOT use Airtel on principal.

Both companies are a shameful testimony to the OUR’s inability to create proper competition, our Governments inability to retain any proper control of this island, and both party’s utter disregard for the welfare of this island and it’s people.
