THE final bend on the Val des Terres hill climb course could have a different look about it next summer.

The Guernsey Motorcycle & Car Club are seeking permission to put a one-metre high and 10-15m long grass bank on the corner next to the slip road at the top of the hill.

But, GMC & CC’s hill climb committee chairman Ian Le Page insists the proposals is not in response to Nick Saunders’ spectacular end of season crash in the same vicinity when one of the wheels of his racing car flew off the car and bounced dangerously close to spectators.

The area concerned is normally reserved for marshals on a platform held together by scaffolding.

The ruling MSA and ACU safety officials would rather that not be the case, said Le Page.

‘When they last did a track inspection they said they preferred it [the scaffolding] to be taken down and a bank put there.

‘They would prefer a one-metre high bank with a flat top,’ he added.

But while the GMC&CC are hopeful that they will receive the necessary permission, future racing does not depend on it.
