GUERNSEY’S Heather Watson, Alison Merrien and Jeremy Frith are in the running for the 2009 Sportingbet Sports Personality of the Year Award.

Tennis star Watson won the US Junior Open while top international bowler Merrien had another fantastic year.

Cricketer Frith claimed back-to-back player of the tournament accolades after remarkable performances in the Pepsi ICC World Cricket League Division Seven and then Division Six.

They join Jersey’s Matt Banahan, who made his full England rugby debut this summer and won the CI award in 2007, and Bournemouth footballer Brett Pitman in the shortlist. There was a record number of 303 nominations.

Channel Islanders will be able to vote for their favourite sportsman or woman in this award from 6pm this evening.

Sportingbet managing director Bob Dutnall said the line-up was a clear reflection of the depth of talent held locally in the islands.

‘It’s great to see a line-up including not only Channel Islands sporting talent like Alison Merrien, Matt Banahan and Heather Watson, maintaining their top form, but also newcomers like Brett Pitman and Jeremy Frith being recognised for this prestigious accolade.

‘It’s fantastic to see these individuals being honoured for their achievements.’
