THE crew of an international circus yesterday got down to the 48-hour task of setting up the big top.

It is the first time Gandey’s Circus has come to the island and it will be at Salerie Corner from Thursday until Friday.

But its arrival was not as smooth as had been expected – snow caused a two-hour delay.

Nevertheless, by 12.30pm the pitch was marked out and articulated lorries loaded with equipment were being unpacked.

Ringmaster Binky Beaumont said the crew, who were busy sorting out the tent, flooring and seating, would work through the night to be ready for the first show at 5pm tomorrow.

‘We should be finished by 4pm to open at 5pm. The weather has caused us a few delays, but we will be open without a problem.’

At least the clowns wont have far to walk to perform – States Chambers to Salerie is under a mile!!

What a complete and utter waste of time!

I’m all for bringing such things over to the island but could it not have been done at a better time of year (leaving the unpredictability of ice and snow to one side) January is hardly a great month for an outdoorish activity for children.

    I agree with the above.

Plus why close Salarie – the largest 10hr parking spot (which always fills, everyday) and not open any extra 10hr parking?!

StunnedGuern – the advertising calls this “Gandey’s International Christmas Circus” – although one could argue the point that Christmas has passed, it would look a bit daft having a Christmas circus in July!! ;-)

Paul Le Page, point taken. I hadn’t really paid too much attention to the advertising and the word Christmas was ommitted from the article above.

Perhaps the circus (albeit a renamed version – Gandey’s International Summertime Circus) would have been better suited to coincide with the Town Carnival? Only a thought.

We went to the circus last night and the acts were very good; particular highlights were the tumblers/street dancers from Colombia and the other young acrobats-all very professional and impressive. The ticket prices are quite high but well worth it considering the quality of the acts. Dress up very warmly as the tent was breezy in the Force 7 winds.
