Hospital illness leads to cancelled operations

Wednesday 6th January 2010, 2:29PM GMT.

Victoria Wing closedSIX operations were cancelled at the Princess Elizabeth Hospital yesterday after another patient on Victoria Wing was struck by diarrhoea and vomiting.

Health and Social Services has not yet identified the cause of the problem that first hit patients and staff overnight on Sunday.

The ward remains closed to new admissions.

It will not open until 48 hours have passed without any new cases and no symptoms are shown by those already diagnosed.

A review at 9am yesterday revealed one case overnight.

‘With both medical wards at full capacity today, the closure of Victoria Wing meant that there was no overflow facility available,’ said a department spokesman yesterday.

‘As a result, the Princess Elizabeth Hospital has had to cancel six patients booked in today for elective surgery – and arrangements will be made to reschedule those operations as soon as possible.
