Wannabe striker Ridley keeping the goals at bay

Glyn RidleyHE MAY be old enough to be most of their dads, but Glyn Ridley is certainly doing his bit of saving Bels’ double dreams.

Most 44-year-olds might rather have been at home, wrapped up in front of their fire in their slippers on a bitterly cold January night, but on Monday evening Ridley found himself in goal for Bels at St Martin’s for their crucial Clydesdale International Guernsey FA Cup quarter-final.

The veteran shot-stopper (pictured) had been called in as cover for the injured Rhys Gower.

And from a distance he looked a player half his age as he athletically pulled off a number of top notch saves that helped ensure Bels won 2-1.

Ridley played in their previous league match with Saints on the Saturday before Christmas, which they lost by one goal. He felt Bels played better that day.

‘It was a good game [on Monday], but I don’t think we played as well as when we got beat 4-3,’ he said.

‘St Martin’s had a few chances. I don’t think we played particularly well, but at the end of the day we got the result and that’s what matters.’
