ST PETER PORT’S distinctive SeaGuernsey mast is coming down for maintenance for the first time.
The 32-metre structure on the Weighbridge roundabout was put up in 2005 for the Year of the Sea.
It was expected to stay up only until the end of that year but a campaign was mounted to make it permanent.
Marine & General Engineers technical manager Andrew Way helped put up the mast.
He said it was time for some essential work.
‘It was only a temporary structure, but people liked it. From a distance the mast looks fine, but when you get up close you can see it needs maintenance.’
The steel has started to show rust spots. While it is still structurally sound, Mr Way said work was needed to keep it that way.
