TEMPERATURES are rising in at least one part of Town as the Market Square ice rink is defrosted.

Islanders had their last chance to take to the ice on Tuesday.

Everything Ice Ltd managing director James Evans said his company was working hard to restore the square.

‘The first thing we need to do is reverse the way the chillers run to make them heat up the rink from underneath instead of chilling it,’ he said.

‘Over the course of three-and-a-half hours, the system will change from running at minus 15 degrees to running at plus 35 degrees, melting the ice and leaving the water to drain away from below.’

He said once the process was under way, the barriers, which are frozen into six inches of ice, could be dismantled.

Skating may return next Christmas following its success this time. The rink opened on 11 December and more than 16,000 people had a try over the festive season.

See you next year…and maybe they can put a huge tree and lights all around the market to make it the centre piece SPP needs. Thanks again
