1,700 passengers stuck while runway ice melts

Friday 8th January 2010, 2:30PM GMT.

Airport in the snowHUNDREDS of local air passengers remain grounded today in Guernsey and the UK although other airports are open.

Untreated ice here means more than 1,700 travellers are facing another day of misery.

Airport director Colin Le Ray said they would be working to get planes flying by lunchtime.

‘We have still got ice on the runway, meaning conditions are below operating limits.’

However, Gatwick was open this morning, although there was ice on its runway.

Southampton, Jersey and Bristol airports are also open but are facing delays, while flights to the Isle of Man are also operating.

The mail and newspaper planes were both held up this morning.

Schools are open today, despite some bus services to the Grammar School, Les Beaucamps and La Mare de Carteret having been cancelled because of untreated roads.

You get the feeling there is a fairly poorly vieled thread running through these articles.
    Yes the roads are untreated.
Who wants to drink the muck if the roads were treated!

A ridiculous state of affairs. Where is super trott? With all the hot air he spouts he could melt the runway ice in seconds! Must be too busy with his Finance Business commitments and his promotion of it as CM and former TM. Mind you it would probably cost the Island 17% like the last time he got involved with the airport.

Do our coast roads run-off into reservoirs? No.

Or all roads further inland, for example around Beau Sejour, or through Kings Mills? I don’t think so.

Let’s take the blinkers off. In particular let’s keep our buses running wherever we can.

When the airport firemen were on strike, matters got sorted out fairly quickly by the Chief Minister (albeit at a cost) as we needed the airport open
Now, when the airport is closed for longer, why can’t someone authorize the use of salt on the icy runway?
If water pollution is a huge problem, then why not let the ‘ contaminated’ streams from the airport area run to waste for a while – after all the reservoirs must be full!!
