£700 retention bonus means airport firefighters get rise that’s 18%-plus

Monday 11th January 2010, 1:00PM GMT.

Tony SpruceAIRPORT firefighters will be paid even more than first thought under their new deals, the Guernsey Press has learned.

According to sources, each firefighter will get £700 at the completion of a three-year term with the service as a retention bonus.

The £700 is on top of a £2,300 pay rise and £900 for attending refresher courses in the UK.

Deputy Tony Spruce (pictured), who resigned from the Public Sector Remuneration Committee over the firefighter pay dispute that closed the airport in May, said he would be very unhappy if that were the case.

‘I would be greatly disappointed because there are retention problems throughout the civil service, in all departments,’ he said.

‘It’s just a means to give the firemen whatever they want, dressed up in a number of ways.’

He had heard of the retention bonus, although he was not surprised as although he had repeatedly sought more information he had received none.

‘I am not getting any clear-cut answers. I have spoken to the new chairman of PSRC and to Public Services.’

‘I have asked questions of certain people but get no answers.’

    Hacked off

I got 2.75% but obviously it is right given their job can hold the island to ransom
If I was a Bus/ Sewage cart driver I would suggest you go for the 18% as Guernsey can not take much more poop as it may contanimate the water!!!
As a bus driver you could strike, kids can not get to school, parents could not work…anarchy on our island…oh, thats Wednesday when Mr Frosty tickles the roads

    Doh!!

Get real with using percentages. What is the percentage on? £1.00 or £100000.00? There is a big difference on the end result.ie,18p or £18000.00 @18%

    RAE

    Doh
It is the percentage that matters as if all staff in the states get an 18% increase then who has to pay for it?
Can they really say that this was just bringing them to the correct level?
What is the point of 5 years training if a nurse or other undervalued worker can now do less training, no stress and wait for a 1 in 8 million chance a flight having a fatality and become a airport firefighter. I think it is about time we move another states department up to the airport and during lulls :) they clean states cars or other efficient/cost saving schemes.

    Doh!!

It seems to me from your post, that you appear to have a beef with the AFS.If other departments think they need a pay increase, then why don’t they put a case together and go and fight for that case. The lower paid workers wages has absolutely nothing to do with the AFS or the individuals that work there.
In your wisdom, could you perhaps suggest another States Department to come and do the job of the AFS? because as far as the CAA end regulatory bodies are concerned, you do actually need a specific qualification, which inturn would require your suggested “workers” to retrain as AFS personnel and then themselves become part of your personal beef.
Obviously in your world an emergency service needs fatalities to justify them. How shallow you are. They are there to prevent escalation of incidents and save lives.
