SCOTTISH Premier League outfits Motherwell and Hamilton Academicals will be playing at Foote’s Lane next month.

The clubs are confirmed starters, along with progressive local newcomers Guernsey Athletics, in the inaugural Clydesdale International Tournament, which will also feature an as yet unconfirmed fourth side from the UK or, more likely, from Jersey.

‘We see it as being an annual event – we don’t want it to be a one off,’ said James Blower, managing director of Clydesdale in Guernsey at yesterday’s launch.

The two-day tournament will see all four sides play each other in 60min. matches.

Unfortunately, the tournament weekend, 13-14 February, clashes with Guernsey’s FA Carlsberg National League System Cup quarter-final with the Hertfordshire League.

Blower said it could not be helped and hoped the whole weekend would be seen as a festival of live football.

The choice of weekend had been dictated by the fact that it was a free weekend in the Clydesdale-sponsored Scottish Premier League schedule.

‘It is an unfortunate clash but we are doing everything we can to minimise it.’

This all sounds well and good but I cant help thinking that it is just another kick in the teeth of Island football.

I bet Tony Vance would jump at the chance to give the Island first eleven a competition of this standard. He is desperate for games and a competition of this nature would help him no end. What will it do for Tics? I suggest nothing. Lets be honest Tics will get slaughtered and learn very little because it will be so far above them but Vance could have really used this kind of opposition to prepare for bigger games.

It makes me boil that this group walked out on the GFA when they did and continue to out do the GFA on what is not a level playing field. If they had remained within the GFA Board this money and competition could have been available to the GFA. Mark Le Tissier is far to mild mannered and balanced to say anything but him, his Board and the Island Manager must feel sickened to see this money and kind of opportunity being basically wasted on no hopers.

‘For the good of Guernsey football’ was their starting slogan – I for one continue to feel very annoyed that their funding actually goes to waste and does nothing for the good of Guernsey football – it just provides their group with new boots, no subs and opportunities to play games well out of their league
