POINTES LANE residents say deputies failed them during more than 15 years of campaigning against burning at a rural waste depot.

Island Waste, based in the St Andrew’s road, has stopped all timber burning with immediate effect after a Royal Court order was imposed on it on Tuesday.

The news delighted neighbours, but they say more should have been done a long time ago.

John Le Noury and his wife Gill live in the road and in previous years he has written to many deputies and States departments about the problem – but got little response.

‘I am really happy about it, but I’m not so happy that it has taken more than 15 years to happen,’ he said yesterday.

‘When you think about the amount of pollution and toxins that have been given out it must have affected the whole island, not just us.’

The Health and Social Services Department took the issue to court after residents complained.

On Tuesday, the Royal Court ordered Island Waste to stop emitting any smoke, ash or gritty particles from its air curtain burner that would cause a nuisance to properties within 150 metres of its site boundary.

Shortly after the hearing, Island Waste said it would stop burning altogether.
