A CYCLIST severely injured in a road accident 11 years ago was awarded more than £9m. by the Royal Court.

Manny Helmot’s guardians – his mother Rose and stepfather Ken Jordan – had brought an £18m claim. on his behalf.

The court yesterday awarded Mr Helmot  £235,000 for pain, suffering and loss of amenity; £1,328,389 for past losses; and £7,774,462 to cover his future.

That brought the total payout to £9,337,852 plus £113,587 interest, which was agreed by the parties.

It was argued that Mr Helmot would need a private swimming pool, cycle track and workshop at his home to meet his future needs, but the court made no award for any of these.

A claim for potential earnings from a possible semi-professional cycling career was also denied.

The action was brought against car driver Dylan Simon, but he took no active part in proceedings.

Mr Helmot’s guardians later issued a statement in which they thanked the court for its time – especially the honorary jurats.

But they also said that they were considering an appeal. They believe that the multiplier used to calculate part of the award had been too low.
