Public stays away from WAO meeting

Auditor-General for Wales Jeremy Colman. (0901929)
ISLANDERS last night had a chance to have their voice heard about the state of Guernsey’s government.
A meeting was held by the Public Accounts Committee with representatives from the Wales Audit Office following the latter’s report published last year on improvements that need to be made to the standard of Guernsey’s governance.
Many of the 50 or so in attendance were deputies, with many seats left empty in the hall at St Sampson’s High.
The meeting also included a workshop, which allowed those attending to tell the PAC what improvements could be made.
Ian Griffiths, a retired teacher, was one of those attending.
‘I came to find out more about the actual report itself,’ said the 67-year-old.
‘I have read bits of it in the Press but want to find out a bit more. We elected people so we should be able to say how we feel they should work.’
Kevin Falla, 77, came to hear what the deputies had to say.
‘The whole thing is a mess I think,’ said the retired carpenter. ‘Some deputies don’t talk to other deputies. There’s lots of things I don’t agree with.’

Voice For Victims
Voice for Victims is a campaign aimed at promoting the rights of those affected by child sexual abuse.
There’s a lesson here. And that’s the difference between media interest and public interest.
To my knowledge this was not advertised well – and it was at the last minute.
Perhaps more people would have attended if more notice had been given.
